About Algarve
The Algarve combines sandy beaches, dramatic cliffs, marina resorts and historic towns across Portugal’s southern coast. Its scenery is a major attraction, but many properties sit above the shoreline and apparently short routes can involve steep streets, steps or cobbled surfaces.
Albufeira offers the greatest concentration of entertainment, Vilamoura centres on a marina, Lagos combines history with striking coastal scenery, and Praia da Rocha provides a long beach resort. Boat trips, golf and inland excursions are popular but need individual access checks.
Who might enjoy Algarve
Vilamoura’s marina area is comparatively level, while the old parts of Albufeira and Lagos are more demanding. Cliff-top accommodation may depend on lifts or shuttles for beach access. Spring and autumn can be especially pleasant for outdoor mobility without peak summer heat.
A good holiday depends on the relationship between the traveller, the exact accommodation and the routes they intend to use. Our guidance avoids describing an entire destination as simply “accessible”.

Albufeira and several coastal resorts include steep roads and stepped shortcuts. Vilamoura has comparatively level marina routes, while Lagos mixes modern and historic surfaces.
Accessibility is personal: distance, gradient, surface, heat and crowding affect travellers differently. Trace the complete route from the accommodation to the places that matter, including the return journey.
Choosing where to stay
Choose a base by terrain and daily routine. A cliff-top hotel may advertise beach proximity while requiring a steep route or shuttle.
Ask for the narrowest doorway, lift dimensions, bathroom transfer space, bed height and a step-free route to every hotel facility that will be used. Obtain important commitments in writing.
Airport transfers and local transport
Nearest airport: Faro Airport. Road transfers from Faro vary by resort. Confirm whether the vehicle carries the traveller in their wheelchair or only stores a folded chair.
Tell the transfer company whether the traveller can move into a vehicle seat or must remain in the wheelchair. Provide chair or scooter dimensions, combined weight, companion numbers and luggage details.
